Yorkshire Three Peaks triumph

A team from Emmaus Leeds have completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge to raise funds in memory of their friend and colleague Steven Wall.

Steven, who lived and worked at Emmaus Leeds, passed away earlier this year after a two year battle with cancer. The Emmaus Leeds community were keen to carry out an act of solidarity in memory of Steven and this year embarked on Wall’s Walking Challenge.

The team, made up of companions, staff and friends of Emmaus Leeds, completed the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge on Sunday 25 September in a time of 12 hours, 15 minutes.

“We battled through extreme weather conditions, including torrential rain and hail storms. We were wringing our socks out at the checkpoints and trying to keep warm. Despite the challenges we faced and the brutal conditions we experienced, we had an amazing time and we are so proud of ourselves for pushing on to the finish and completing the walk in memory of our friend Steven.”

Emmaus Leeds supports 26 formerly homeless people by providing them with a stable home and meaningful work for as long as they need it. The charity has its main base at St Mary’s Street and runs two shops at Kirkgate Market where they sell donated furniture, clothes, books, bikes, household goods and upcycled products.

“Earlier this year we completed Snowdon and Scafell Pike as part of Wall’s Walking Challenge. The Yorkshire Three Peaks leg was a real challenge for us all, but we managed it and had a great time. Now our attention turns to the final leg up Ben Nevis in Spring 2017.”

All money raised from Wall’s Walking Challenge will be donated to Macmillan Cancer Support, St Gemma’s Hospice and a memorial plaque to celebrate the life of Steven. The concept of solidarity, helping others less fortunate than yourself, is a central ethos of Emmaus and a motivation for the companions completing Wall’s Walking Challenge.
