A New Chapter for Birmingham’s Homeless Health Exchange: Compassionate Care in a New Home

In the heart of Birmingham, a vital NHS service is making a big difference to those without a place to call home. The Homeless Health Exchange (HeX) has long been a cornerstone of health support for people experiencing homelessness, insecure housing, or seeking asylum in the city. Now, it’s entering a new chapter.

From William Booth to Bath Row: A Fresh Start

In winter 2024, HeX relocated from its former base at the William Booth Centre following the closure of the Salvation Army site. The service has now reopened in a bright, modern, and more accessible setting at Attwood Green Health Centre on Bath Row. This move has allowed the HeX team to continue their work in a facility better equipped to meet the growing and varied needs of their patients.

Healthcare That Meets You Where You Are

HeX takes a holistic, person-centred approach to healthcare—recognising that those facing homelessness often live with multiple, complex health challenges. Their team brings together doctors, nurses, mental health professionals, outreach workers, and support staff to deliver care that’s compassionate, confidential, and tailored to the individual.

Services on offer include:

  • General health checks and treatments
  • Mental health support, with community psychiatric nurses and talking therapies
  • Substance misuse support, including specialist nursing
  • Sexual health advice and contraception
  • Minor injury care and wound treatment
  • Testing and counselling for HIV and hepatitis B & C
  • Free flu and hepatitis B vaccinations
  • Podiatry services
  • Links to wider health and homelessness support services

Accessing the Service

HeX is open Monday to Friday, with both morning appointments (9:00 AM – 12:30 PM) and afternoon sessions (1:00 PM – 5:00 PM). It’s closed on weekends and bank holidays, but for urgent health issues outside these times, NHS 111 or 999 should be contacted.

For those unable to book in advance, afternoon drop-in clinics run from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Monday to Friday. There’s also a dedicated mental health drop-in every Tuesday during those same hours.

Who Can Register?

Anyone aged 16 or over who is homeless or vulnerably housed in Birmingham can register with HeX. You can do this in person at the clinic or online via their website. Staff are on hand to support anyone who needs help with the registration process.
