A Visit to the West Midlands Multibank: One Month On and Already Making an Impact

A Visit to the West Midlands Multibank: One Month On and Already Making an Impact

In April 2025, I had the opportunity to visit the West Midlands Multibank, a new initiative managed by Birmingham Voluntary Service Council (BVSC). It had been open just a month, and I was eager to see how it was taking shape. I was warmly welcomed by Lianne Shakespeare, Head of Children, Young People and Families at BVSC, and Brendan O’Driscoll, the Multibank Manager—both of whom are clearly passionate about the difference this project is already making.

From the moment I stepped in, the purpose and energy of the Multibank were clear. This isn’t just a warehouse, it’s a lifeline. Designed to support organisations working to alleviate and reduce the effects of poverty whilst contributing to a more sustainable economy, the Multibank redistributes surplus items from businesses to people who need them most. Food, clothing, toiletries, household items, even small appliances and electronics like air fryers and kettles, all ready to be collected by trusted community organisations and passed directly to families.

There’s a sense of dignity here. It’s about ensuring no good product goes to waste and no family goes without the basics.

How It Works

Organisations can access the Multibank by becoming referral partners. They complete a simple referral form and a working agreement, then book collections—currently available on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with additional limited slots on Wednesdays. The team is incredibly supportive and flexible, helping partners get what they need to support their communities effectively.

During my visit, I got a sense of just how wide-reaching the Multibank’s support already is. Brendan shared:

The West Midlands Multibank is currently working with partners in schools, social work, community hubs and associations, advice and debt relief services, food banks and refugee charities. The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Examples of how the Multibank has supported people include the provision of suitcases for families moving into and out of temporary accommodation, electronic consoles for children with special needs on long bus journeys between home and school. Hygiene, cleaning and household goods have also been distributed to thousands of households already.”

A Powerful Partnership Model

This initiative was launched with the backing of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Amazon, and West Midlands Mayor Richard Parker. It aims to redistribute 750,000 surplus items to 75,000 families over the next year. And from what I’ve seen, they’re already on their way.

What struck me most during the visit was how rooted the Multibank is in partnership and shared purpose. It’s about organisations coming together, reducing duplication, and combining resources to make a bigger impact. Whether supporting families in temporary accommodation or those setting up new homes, the Multibank is meeting real needs with practical help.

It’s a powerful example of what’s possible when we focus on support, not shame.
