Live and Work scheme
Private rent prices are continuously rising which ultimately leads to young people finding it extremely hard to become independent. That’s where St Basil’s ‘Live and Work’ scheme comes in.
The scheme provides accommodation for young workers for under £43 per week inclusive of all bills. This scheme is open to 16 and 24 year olds in the West Midlands who are employed – and is particularly ideal for apprentices and those on a low income.
The scheme is totally Benefit Free which means that young people get the opportunity to Live and to Work without having to rely on welfare benefits.
The accommodation, home to 32 young people, comprised of 8 flats. Each flat has 4 bedrooms, with shared kitchen, dining and bathroom facilities. Its location is only 20 minutes away from Birmingham City Centre with reliable transport links and good local amenities.
The onsite progression coaches offer a bespoke service to the young people living here from Monday to Friday as well as an additional on-call service , should a young person need out of hours support.
Young Worker’s Village
St Basil’s are currently working to secure funds to develop phase 2, creating a Young Workers’ Village.
The charity have taken over four buildings, formerly owned by the NHS, behind Sandwell General Hospital. One of the buildings has already been converted in phase one of the initiative, successfully housing 112 young people who have not returned to homelessness.
St Basil’s are hoping to raise the final amount to convert the other three buildings, providing beds for another 54 people.
To do this, the charity will need £2.3 million, of which they have already raised £1.6 million
