Spotlight: Greater Together Manchester

Greater Together Manchester is an anti-poverty charity supporting and empowering people in Greater Manchester. We work primarily with people who have experience of homelessness and other related difficulties. We run various projects including a Social Super Market, our Befriending Service, Wayfinder, and our activities programme Lifeskills.

How important are volunteers to Greater Together Manchester?

We simply would not run without volunteers! Volunteers are the lifeblood of our organisation’s work. We are a small charity with a small paid staff team of 8, so volunteers make up the bulk of our charity’s workers.

Our Social Super Market volunteers keep our low cost food shop stocked and provide a friendly service to shoppers.

Our Befriending programme is entirely made up of volunteers providing 1-1 support to participants, supported by a staff coordinator.

Our Life Skills programme volunteers support activities, cooking wholesome meals for attendees, running activities and providing a safe space to talk.

What are some of the current volunteer opportunities available at Greater Together Manchester?

Our primary need at the moment is driving volunteers to support with stocking our Social Super Market. Volunteers can support short-term, long-term or one off. You can view the role details and express your interest here.

Our Befriending programme is actively recruiting for long-term volunteers who would like to offer personalised support and practical advice 1-1, supporting people moving away from homelessness to manage their tenancies and improve their life skills. You can view the role details and express your interest here.

There are also other roles available in our Social Supermarket and Life Skills projects, please contact Michaela to discuss.

Not sure which role is for you? You can still complete the full application for our roles online here.

What can I expect from volunteering for Greater Together Manchester?

We are a small friendly team of staff and volunteers, passionate about alleviating the impacts of poverty and homelessness on people in Greater Manchester.

We are a busy organisation with lots of projects and tasks to get involved in; so our volunteer roles are flexible and can be adjusted according to your interests and needs.

We will provide regular 1-1s for you as well as group spaces for learning, connection and reflection. We will provide internal training and access to external opportunities.

If you’re thinking about volunteering, this is Greater Together Manchester’s message for you:

There is immense value in just being there for someone, offering a listening ear, chatting to them about their day to day lives and showing you care!

You don’t need specific skills, experience or time commitments to get involved, just a passion for helping others.
